Sugaring vs. Waxing: The Honest Guide for First-Timers in Peterborough

If you’ve ever typed “sugaring vs waxing” into Google at 11pm the night before a vacation, you’re not alone.
As a licensed hairstylist and certified body sugaring practitioner with 30 years in the beauty industry, I’ve seen every version of “I’m terrified but I’m tired of shaving” walk through my door. The good news? You don’t have to guess your way through it.

In this guide, I’m breaking down the real differences between sugaring and waxing, who each is best for, and what I actually recommend for my clients here in Peterborough.
This isn’t a sales pitch. It’s the same honest conversation I have in my home-based studio every week.
What’s the Actual Difference Between Sugaring and Waxing?
On the surface, both sugaring and waxing are methods of removing hair from the root. But how they do it – and how your skin feels afterward – is very different.

Waxing (traditional hot or strip wax):
  • Uses a resin-based wax that adheres to both hair and skin
  • Is usually applied with the direction of hair growth and removed against it
  • Can feel more intense, especially on sensitive areas like the bikini line and underarms
  • Often leaves more redness or irritation for those with reactive or sensitive skin
Sugaring (what I use at Beauty Cooperative):
  • Uses a simple paste of sugar, water, and lemon – no resins, no mystery ingredients
  • Adheres mainly to the hair and the top layer of dead skin, not live skin
  • Is applied against the direction of hair growth and removed with it
  • Tends to be gentler on the skin and can reduce the risk of ingrowns over time

From my chair, the biggest practical difference my clients notice is how their skin feels afterward – especially over multiple appointments.

Does Sugaring Hurt More Than Waxing?
This is the number one question I get, especially from first-time Brazilian clients.
Here’s the honest answer:
  • Both methods involve removing hair from the root, so there is some discomfort.
  • Most of my clients who have tried both tell me sugaring feels more tolerable and less “stingy” afterward.
  • The first appointment is always the most intense – no matter what method you choose.

Where sugaring really shines is in what happens after that first visit:
  • Because we remove hair in the direction it grows, there’s less breakage at the surface.
  • Less breakage means fewer sharp stubble bits and a lower chance of ingrowns.
  • Over time (usually by your second or third appointment), many clients say, “That was way easier than the first time.”

For Brazilian and LA bikinis in particular, I recommend sugaring because it tends to be kinder to the skin in such a delicate area – and that matters when you’re coming every 3–6 weeks.

Who Is Sugaring Best For?
Based on the clients I see in my Peterborough studio, sugaring is especially good for:
  • Sensitive skin that gets red, rashy, or itchy with traditional waxing
  • Clients prone to ingrowns, especially on the bikini line, underarms, or inner thighs
  • People managing PCOS or hormonal hair growth, where hair can be coarse and stubborn
  • Anyone who wants to grow their hair in softer and finer over time
If you’ve had a bad experience with waxing in the past – lifting, bruising, or feeling “burned” – sugaring is often a much better fit.

Who Might Prefer Waxing?
There are still situations where traditional waxing can make sense:
  • Very coarse hair that’s been shaved for years and is just starting the transition to professional hair removal
  • Areas where speed is the top priority and the skin is less sensitive

In my studio, though, I’ve chosen to focus on sugaring because it aligns with how I like to work: gentle, thorough, and focused on long-term skin health, not just quick hair removal.

How Often Should You Book Sugaring Appointments?

From my professional perspective, an ideal schedule looks like:
  • Brazilian/LA bikini: every 3–5 weeks
  • Underarms: every 3–4 weeks
  • Legs and arms: every 4–6 weeks
The more consistently you come in, the more we can:
  • Catch the hair at the right stage of growth
  • Reduce the overall amount of hair over time
  • Make each appointment feel faster and more comfortable
This is also how I help my business stay steady instead of relying on once-a-year “panic before vacation” appointments.

What to Expect at Your First Sugaring Appointment with Me
If you’re new to a home-based studio, it’s normal to feel a bit unsure. Here’s what actually happens when you come to Beauty Cooperative:
  1. We chat first. I ask about your skin, any medications, and your hair removal history.
  2. I explain the process. I’ll walk you through what I’m doing and why, step by step.
  3. We work within your comfort level. You’re never rushed. We can take breaks, adjust positions, and I’ll always check in.
  4. We go over aftercare. You’ll leave knowing exactly how to care for your skin to avoid irritation and ingrowns.

My studio is fully insured, regularly inspected, and set up just like a professional treatment room – just without the busy salon noise. Many clients tell me they love the privacy and one-on-one attention.

So… Should You Choose Sugaring or Waxing?
If you’re in Peterborough and you:
  • Have sensitive or reactive skin
  • Are tired of ingrowns and razor burn
  • Want a gentler option for Brazilian or LA bikini
  • Prefer a more natural ingredient list
…I strongly recommend starting with sugaring.

If you’re still not sure, we can always start with a smaller area (like underarms or a basic bikini) and see how your skin responds before moving to a full Brazilian.
Ready to Try Sugaring in Peterborough?
If this sounds like the right fit for you, here’s what I recommend:
  • Step 1: Let your hair grow for at least 2 weeks (3 is even better) after shaving.
  • Step 2: Book your first sugaring appointment online through my Fresha link on beautycooperative.ca.
  • Step 3: Plan to rebook within 3–5 weeks so we can catch the hair at the right stage and make each visit easier than the last.
If you have questions before you’re ready to book, you’re always welcome to reach out – I’d much rather you feel informed and comfortable than rush into something you’re unsure about.

Competition & Photo Shoot Spray Tan: Pre-Tan and Post-Tan Guide

You’ve put in the work—now it’s time to showcase your hard-earned results on stage or in front of the camera. As a fellow competitor, I understand the dedication and discipline required to reach this moment, and I take great pride in helping you look and feel your absolute best.
A flawless competition or photo shoot tan is equal parts expert application and meticulous skin prep. Follow these guidelines to ensure your tan looks perfect under the lights and in every photo.
Four Weeks Before Your Event
  • Exfoliate Gently: Once or twice a week, focus on dry or problem areas (knees, elbows, ankles, back of heels). Avoid body washes that leave a film (especially Dove).
Tip: I offer spray tan-safe body wash and exfoliating mitts in-studio. Aveeno and Cetaphil are also good alternatives.
  • Manage Skin Conditions: If you have conditions like Tinea Versicolor, use a medicated body wash (like Selsun Blue) to minimize appearance under your tan.
  • Daily Moisturizing: Hydrate your skin daily with a quality moisturizer. Hempz (available in-studio and online) is my top recommendation; Aveeno is also suitable.
  • Avoid Deodorant/Antiperspirant: These can react with bronzers and cause a green hue.

Peak Week: Monday–Thursday
  • Daily Exfoliation: Gently exfoliate every day, paying extra attention to rough areas.
  • Moisturize Daily: Continue using a tan-safe moisturizer.
  • Hair Removal: Ensure all visible hair (judges will see!) is removed at least 24 hours before tanning.
    • Shaving? Avoid razors with moisture strips.
    • Sugaring/Waxing? Book for Tuesday or Wednesday.
    • No Nair—can cause irritation and uneven results.
  • Avoid Sunburn: Always use sunscreen to protect your skin.

The Day Before Your Tan (Assuming Friday for a Saturday Show)
  • Final Exfoliation: Gently exfoliate and rinse thoroughly with cool water at least 4 hours before your tan.
  • Shower Routine: If washing your hair, do so before washing your body.
  • No Lotions, Perfume, or Deodorant: Arrive with clean, product-free skin.
If your tan is on a different day, adjust accordingly and follow these same steps.
What to Bring & Wear
  • After Your Tan:
    • Loose, long pants and sleeves (no bras or tight clothing)
    • Sandals (no socks)
  • Sleeping in Your Tan:
    • Use old, dark sheets and wear loose, long-sleeved clothing to bed.
  • Protecting Hotel Rooms:
    • Bring your own dark sheets and pillowcases to cover hotel bedding.
    • Bring your own towels and a shower curtain to protect hotel surfaces.
    • Consider wrapping the toilet seat with cling wrap or using a disposable cover to prevent staining.
Hotels may charge for stained linens. It’s your responsibility to protect their property.
Post-Tan & Show Day
  • Shower Timing: Follow your artist’s guidance for your first rinse. Use only water—no soap or scrubbing.
  • Moisturize Gently: After rinsing, pat skin dry and moisturize with a tan-friendly lotion.
  • Avoid Deodorant and Products Until After Your Event:These can cause discoloration or affect your tan’s finish.

Final Tips
  • Hydrate: Dehydration can affect how your tan develops and looks on stage.
  • Questions? I’m always here to help—reach out anytime for personalized advice or support.

Sunless Tanning Care: Before & After Your Spray Tan

A flawless, natural-looking tan starts with the right preparation and aftercare. Here’s everything you need to know to achieve a beautiful, long-lasting glow—plus a few expert tips from my studio to help you look and feel your absolute best.24–48 Hours Before Your Appointment
  • Book Beauty Services in Advance: Schedule manicures, pedicures, facials, massages, and hair appointments at least a day before your tan. These services can affect how your tan develops.
  • Sugaring or Waxing: For the smoothest results, complete any sugaring or waxing at least 24 hours before your spray tan.
  • Shaving: If you prefer to shave, do so at least 12 hours prior and rinse away all shaving products. Avoid razors with moisturizing strips.
  • Exfoliate for Perfection: Exfoliate thoroughly 24 hours before your appointment using an oil-free scrub or exfoliating mitt. Removing old self-tan ensures a flawless, even result. (Exfoliation mitts and tan erasers are available in the studio.)
  • Avoid Residue-Heavy Products: Steer clear of body washes and soaps that leave a film—especially Dove.
The Day of Your Tan
  • Shower: Bathe the morning of your appointment (or the night before if your session is early). Use only gentle, residue-free products.
  • No Lotions, Perfume, or Deodorant: Arrive with clean, dry skin to ensure the best possible tan development.
  • Dress in Comfort & Style: Choose loose, dark clothing and flip-flops. Cotton is ideal to prevent staining or streaks.
  • Hair & Accessories: Secure your hair back with a provided cap. Lip balm is welcome, and disposable nose filters are available for your comfort.
  • Your Comfort Matters: Wear what makes you feel most at ease—bikini, swimsuit, or undress to your comfort level. (All bodies and genders are welcome. For those with penises, coverage is required for your comfort and safety.)
After Your Tan
  • Protect Your Car & Clothing: Bring a dark towel for your car seat and avoid tight clothing immediately after your session.
  • Plan Your First Rinse: If possible, rinse before bed. If not, use old sheets to avoid bronzer transfer. I’ll advise you on the ideal rinse time for your chosen solution.
  • First Shower: Rinse with warm water only—no soap. Your colour will continue to develop over the next 24 hours.
  • After 12–24 Hours: Resume showering as normal with a tan-safe body wash (available in-studio).
  • Delay Shaving: For the best results, avoid shaving for three days post-tan.
Maintaining Your Radiance
  • Pat Dry, Don’t Rub: Be gentle after bathing to preserve your tan.
  • Moisturize Twice Daily: Hydrated skin maintains your tan’s luminosity. I recommend Hempz lotion, available at the studio.
  • Avoid AHA Products: Products containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids may cause your tan to fade more quickly.
  • Skip Drugstore Self-Tanners: For touch-ups, I offer safe, DHA-infused products to extend your glow.
  • Enjoy Lasting Results: Most clients experience 8–12 days of beautiful colour, depending on skin type and lifestyle.
Expert Tip: For the most even results, ensure your previous spray tan is completely removed before your next session. Ask about our tan erasers and exfoliating products!

Classic Lash Extension Aftercare: Keep Your Lashes Looking Flawless

Picture
Congratulations on your beautiful new set of classic lash extensions! Choosing a certified, highly trained lash artist is the first step to effortless beauty—and now, you get to enjoy waking up every day with a touch of instant glamour.
To help you keep your lashes looking their absolute best, here’s a clear, expert-backed guide to aftercare. With the right routine, your extensions will remain comfortable, beautiful, and long-lasting.The First 24 Hours: Protect Your Investment
  • Keep Lashes Dry: Avoid getting your lashes wet for the first 24 hours following your appointment. (If your artist used a specific adhesive, ask for their recommendation.)
  • If They Get Wet: Gently pat dry—never rub. Rubbing can cause premature lash loss and impact your next fill.
Ongoing Lash Extension Care
  • Avoid Eye Makeup: Skip eyeliner and mascara near your extensions. These products can compromise the adhesive and cause buildup.
  • No Oil-Based Products: Avoid makeup removers and cleansers with oil, as oil breaks down the lash bond. I’m happy to recommend a safe, gentle lash cleanser for your daily routine.
  • Limit Heat Exposure: Steer clear of saunas, hot tubs, and direct heat from ovens or stoves. Excess heat can weaken the adhesive.
  • Skip Mascara: Your extensions provide all the volume you need! Mascara can clump and weaken bonds, making fills more difficult.
  • Hands Off: Avoid rubbing, pulling, or picking at your lashes—this can damage both extensions and your natural lashes.
  • Sleep Smart: Try not to sleep on your face. Consider a cupped sleep mask to help protect your lashes overnight.
  • Clean & Brush Daily: Gently cleanse your lashes every day to remove makeup and debris. Brush with a clean spoolie to keep them neat and separated. (Remember to clean your spoolie regularly.)
Maintaining Your Lash Look
  • Gentle Care: Pat your lashes dry after cleansing, and avoid any harsh movements.
  • Routine Maintenance: Regular fills and proper aftercare extend the life and beauty of your lashes.
  • Professional Products: Ask about recommended cleansers and tools to keep your lashes and eyes healthy.

Questions or Ready for Your Next Appointment? If you have any questions about your lash extensions or aftercare, I’m always here to help.
Book your next appointment online, shop for lash-safe products in-studio, or reach out directly for personalized guidance.
Thank you for trusting me with your lash journey. I look forward to helping you look and feel your most confident, every day.
